Movie Review: A Christmas Carousel
Subtitle: “Restoring Royalty, Romance, and Really Big Rides.”
A Christmas Carousel spins Hallmark's holiday formula into a royal romance set against the backdrop of a magical carousel restoration project. Yes, that’s right: this isn’t just about love—it’s about fixing a carousel so majestic it could only exist in a fictional European kingdom that’s somehow obsessed with Christmas and amusement park rides.
The story follows Lila (Rachel Boston), an art restorer whose family is tasked with bringing the royal carousel of the Kingdom of Ancadia back to its former glory. While Lila scrapes paint and buffs wooden horses, she strikes up a connection with Prince Whitaker (Neal Bledsoe), a royal who is as charming as he is clueless about real life. Their budding romance is as predictable as a carousel ride (you know you’re going in circles, but it’s still fun), yet so sweet you’ll forgive its utter lack of surprises.
Rachel Boston’s Lila is a Hallmark heroine through and through: kind, hardworking, and inexplicably unfazed by the pressure of restoring a royal heirloom. Neal Bledsoe’s Prince Whitaker has all the regal charm of a Hallmark prince, complete with a vaguely European accent and the emotional depth of someone who’s just discovered hot cocoa for the first time. Together, they share a chemistry that grows steadily over decorating cookies, wandering castle halls, and staring longingly at carousel horses.
The plot? It’s as delightfully absurd as you’d hope:
- The royal family is inexplicably obsessed with this carousel, treating it like it holds the key to world peace.
- The restoration process involves a surprising number of snowball fights, awkward romantic moments, and zero actual stress—because in Hallmark Land, deadlines are more of a suggestion.
- A big Christmas ball serves as the inevitable setting for love declarations, holiday magic, and Lila’s stunning gown that somehow gets restored just as quickly as the carousel.
Unintentionally hilarious highlights include:
- Prince Whitaker’s overly dramatic reaction to literally everything, from carousel paint choices to Lila’s gasp independence.
- Lila's family casually bringing the carousel back to life as though it's a DIY weekend project instead of an ancient artifact.
- The fact that this fictional kingdom seems to revolve entirely around Christmas, carousels, and awkward matchmaking attempts by the Queen.
The real star, of course, is the carousel itself. Shot with the reverence of a Hollywood diva, it gleams and sparkles in every scene, making you wonder if the budget for fake snow was diverted into carousel lighting. By the time it’s unveiled at the grand ball, you’ll be convinced it’s the eighth wonder of the world.
Despite its silliness, A Christmas Carousel delivers exactly what it promises: a heartwarming love story wrapped in holiday cheer and just enough whimsy to make you believe in the magic of Christmas. It’s predictable, yes, but isn’t that why we love Hallmark movies in the first place? Watch it with a mug of cocoa and a healthy dose of suspension of disbelief—it’s a merry-go-round ride you won’t regret. 🎠🎄❤️
