A Christmas Love Story (2019): A Holiday Hit High Note
If you ever thought a Hallmark Christmas movie couldn’t pack a powerhouse diva, an unexpected twist, and more holiday cheer than Santa’s workshop, A Christmas Love Story is here to prove you wrong. Starring Kristin Chenoweth—who somehow manages to make singing, acting, and looking fabulous in winter coats seem effortless—this movie is like the glittery Broadway-meets-Christmas mashup you never knew you needed.
Kristin plays Katherine, a choir director with a knack for creating magical Christmas Eve performances and, apparently, for solving all of life’s problems in a single song. Her mission: write an original carol for the kids to perform at the big event. Easy, right? Wrong. Turns out, writer's block and an unexpected meet-cute with a widowed dad named Greg (played by Scott Wolf) make for a delightfully chaotic mix.
Greg, by the way, is the epitome of the Hallmark leading man: rugged, emotionally guarded, and perpetually wearing sweaters that scream “I’d rather be chopping firewood.” Their chemistry starts off like a lukewarm cup of cider but builds to the kind of sparkly, snow-dusted romance Hallmark does best. Bonus points for Greg’s son Danny, a precocious choir member with a "secret" so obvious that even the angel on top of the Christmas tree saw it coming.
Speaking of plot twists, this movie has a reveal so dramatic it almost feels like it wandered in from a soap opera. I won’t spoil it, but let’s just say it’s the kind of revelation that makes you gasp, laugh, and roll your eyes all at the same time. Somehow, though, Kristin Chenoweth handles it with such grace that you’ll forgive the melodrama.
Now, let’s talk about the music. Kristin’s voice is so good it could probably bring peace on Earth, and the movie wisely lets her shine. Her big musical moments are heartfelt and cheesy in all the best ways, leaving you thinking, “Wow, I should really start a choir.” The original songs are catchy, and by the end, you’ll feel like you just attended the fanciest Christmas concert in town, all from your couch.
The setting is peak Hallmark: twinkling lights everywhere, enough snow to make a ski resort jealous, and a church that’s so gorgeously lit it looks like Heaven booked it for a photoshoot. It’s like Christmas threw up on every frame, and honestly, isn’t that what we’re all here for?
Sure, the movie is predictable, and the dialogue is so saccharine it could give you a sugar rush. But that’s the beauty of Hallmark—you’re not here for gritty realism; you’re here for cozy, feel-good vibes and over-the-top holiday magic. And A Christmas Love Story delivers all that and more, with Kristin Chenoweth’s charm carrying it straight to the top of Santa’s “nice” list.
So grab a blanket, pour yourself a mug of cocoa (don’t skimp on the whipped cream), and prepare to be swept away. It’s not just a Christmas movie; it’s a festive musical gift wrapped with a big, glittery bow. And if you don’t tear up at least once, you might need to check your holiday spirit levels. 🎄🎶
