A Family Christmas Gift (2019): Deck the Halls with Unrealistic Career Goals
If you’re looking for a Christmas movie that combines a sassy diva, a family heirloom mansion, and more baked goods than a bakery clearance sale, A Family Christmas Gift delivers like Santa on a turbo-charged sleigh. This Hallmark movie has it all: over-the-top holiday cheer, predictable romance, and Patti LaBelle singing her heart out because, let’s face it, she’s the queen of everything.
The movie follows Amber (Holly Robinson Peete), a workaholic journalist who visits her Aunt Dora (Patti LaBelle) for the holidays, only to be hit with a wave of family and Christmas spirit so strong it could knock over a fully decorated tree. Amber’s job has her tethered to her laptop like it’s her life support, but Aunt Dora’s holiday hospitality (and legendary cookies) quickly start to loosen her up.
Enter Alan (Dion Johnstone), the charming neighborhood handyman who looks like he could moonlight as a holiday calendar model. Alan is kind, helpful, and has a knack for showing up at the exact right moment to save the day—whether it’s to fix a broken ornament or help Amber figure out the meaning of life. You know, handyman stuff.
The plot kicks into gear when Aunt Dora decides to throw a community Christmas fundraiser concert to save something important—though I’m still unclear if it’s the spirit of Christmas or just the town’s supply of warm fuzzies. Naturally, Amber gets roped into helping organize it, which conveniently gives her plenty of time to fall for Alan between wrapping presents and untangling lights.
Speaking of lights, this movie goes all in on Christmas décor. Aunt Dora’s house looks like a festive explosion of garland, glitter, and Patti LaBelle’s fabulousness. If you’re not in the holiday spirit by the time you see her kitchen, you’re officially the Grinch.
The highlight of the movie is, of course, Patti LaBelle. She delivers wisdom, sass, and baked goods with the kind of flair that makes you want to be adopted into her family immediately. When she belts out a song during the big concert, it’s so good you’ll forget how many plot holes are hiding in the script.
The romance between Amber and Alan is sweet, if a little paint-by-numbers. They bond over decorating trees, sharing hot cocoa, and exchanging heartfelt looks that scream end credits kiss. It’s not groundbreaking, but it’s as comforting as a warm gingerbread cookie.
Sure, the movie’s predictable, and some scenes are so sugary you might need an insulin shot afterward. But that’s what you signed up for, right? A Family Christmas Gift is like a Christmas card from a relative you only kind of know—corny, over-the-top, but oddly heartwarming.
So grab some cookies (bonus points if they’re Patti LaBelle’s), pour yourself a glass of eggnog, and let this movie remind you that sometimes, the best gift is spending time with family—even if it comes with a side of holiday chaos. 🎄🎶
