"A Heavenly Christmas" - Angel Wings and Cheese Strings
When the Afterlife Meets the Hallmark Aesthetic
If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if Hallmark movies got hold of celestial beings and holiday magic, "A Heavenly Christmas" answers that question with a twinkle and a lot of tinsel. This film is peak Hallmark holiday movies material, and by “peak,” I mean it takes you to the very clouds of kitschy goodness.
The story follows Eve (Kristin Davis), a workaholic who meets an untimely end and finds herself conscripted as a Christmas angel-in-training. Her heavenly task? To help a struggling musician rediscover his passion and, naturally, make the holiday season sparkle brighter than the star of Bethlehem. Along the way, Eve discovers that maybe, just maybe, there’s more to life—or afterlife—than spreadsheets and solo Christmases.
The plot is as predictable as a snowman melting in July, but that’s what we love about Hallmark holiday movies, right? It’s comforting, like a cup of hot cocoa that’s a little too sweet but still warms your soul. The dialogue is sprinkled with more Christmas puns than Santa has reindeer, and the sets look like a snowstorm exploded in a craft store.
Kristin Davis plays her role with wide-eyed wonder, while Eric McCormack, the aforementioned musician, delivers a performance that’s equal parts charming and cheesy—just like a perfect Hallmark movie hero should. And Shirley MacLaine as a wise, snarky angel? Divine casting. Literally.
The film isn’t without its flaws. The “heaven” scenes look like they borrowed a green screen from 1998, and the climax is so saccharine that you’ll need to brush your teeth afterward. But hey, it’s Hallmark! Subtlety is not the brand.
In the end, "A Heavenly Christmas" is like a stocking filled with candy canes and glitter—delightful, over-the-top, and unapologetically festive. If you’re in the mood for angelic antics and a heaping dose of holiday cheer, this movie is your ticket to yuletide heaven. Just don’t watch it expecting to stay grounded—it’s a Hallmark holiday movie, after all.
