Movie Review: A Holiday in Harlem
Subtitle: “Big City Hustle Meets Hometown Holiday Magic.”
A Holiday in Harlem is Hallmark’s festive romp through New York’s coolest neighborhood, proving that even a high-powered corporate exec can’t outrun the pull of family, community, and a good tree-lighting ceremony, one of our favorite themes in Hallmark movies. It’s a heartwarming tale about reconnecting with your roots while dodging nosy neighbors and endless holiday events.
The story follows Jazmin (Olivia Washington), a workaholic who’s all about big-city living and corporate climbing—until a surprise Christmas trip back to Harlem throws her into a whirlwind of holiday cheer, family drama, and the undeniable charms of Caleb (Will Adams), her childhood friend-turned-local hero. Cue the romantic sparks flying faster than snowflakes on a Hallmark set.
Olivia Washington’s Jazmin is refreshingly relatable as a protagonist who spends the first half of the movie trying to resist the siren call of small-town holiday magic. She’s sharp, driven, and hilariously unprepared for the level of meddling her grandmother (played by Tina Lifford, who steals every scene she’s in) brings to the table. Will Adams’s Caleb is your classic Hallmark heartthrob: ruggedly good-looking, great with kids, and incapable of saying no to helping with community events—even when he probably should.
The real MVP of this movie, though, is Harlem itself. The neighborhood comes alive with vibrant decorations, bustling streets, and enough Christmas spirit to make even a Grinch crack a smile. From jazzy carolers to pop-up holiday markets, the setting is practically begging you to pack your bags and move there immediately- what great Hallmark movies typically do to us!
The movie’s humor shines in Jazmin’s awkward attempts to fit back into her old community. Whether she’s fumbling through decorating a giant Christmas tree or trying to win over skeptical neighbors with corporate-style pep talks, her fish-out-of-water moments are as funny as they are endearing. Meanwhile, Caleb’s deadpan reactions to her big-city ways—paired with his knack for orchestrating perfectly timed romantic moments—make him the perfect foil.
Of course, there are plenty of Hallmark-approved holiday activities: cookie baking, snowball fights, and heartfelt conversations over hot cocoa. The romance builds predictably but sweetly, with every shared glance and accidental hand touch leading toward the inevitable mistletoe moment.
By the time the big Christmas block party rolls around, complete with twinkling lights and a grand romantic gesture that could only happen in a Hallmark movie, you’ll be rooting for Jazmin and Caleb like they’re your favorite holiday couple. Their chemistry might take a while to heat up, but once it does, it’s as cozy as a Harlem café in December.
As far as Hallmark movies go, a Holiday in Harlem is a delightful mix of urban charm, holiday traditions, and Hallmark-style romance. It’s perfect for anyone who loves vibrant settings, strong family dynamics, and the idea that sometimes, the best way to find yourself is to go back home—preferably with a hot chocolate in one hand and a handsome childhood friend in the other. 🎄❤️✨
