Movie Review: A Kiss Before Christmas
Subtitle: “When Midlife Crisis Meets Christmas Magic.”
A Kiss Before Christmas is Hallmark’s spin on the “be careful what you wish for” trope, adding holiday cheer, some magical intervention, and a splash of It’s a Wonderful Life-style soul-searching. It’s a festive romp that asks the big question: What if you got everything you wanted—except the one thing that actually matters? (Spoiler: It’s love. The answer is always love.)
The story follows Ethan (James Denton), a family man stuck in a rut at work and wondering what life would’ve been like if he’d chosen ambition over family. Enter a mysterious Christmas miracle (thanks to a suspiciously angelic elevator operator), and boom—Ethan wakes up in an alternate reality where he’s a high-powered executive with all the perks and none of the people who love him. Cue the existential crisis, frantic backpedaling, and one man’s quest to literally kiss his way back into his family’s life before Christmas.
James Denton is hilariously relatable as Ethan, nailing the mix of midlife panic and “what have I done?” regret that drives the movie. Watching him stumble through his new life—complete with an ultra-modern apartment, a sleek car, and zero clue how to use a coffee machine without his wife—delivers some solid laughs. Teri Hatcher, playing his real-world wife Joyce, brings warmth and charm to her role, even as Ethan awkwardly tries to explain why he’s suddenly acting like a man on a mission from Santa.
The alternate reality is Hallmark’s version of dystopia: no family dinners, no twinkling Christmas lights, and absolutely no cocoa. It’s cold, corporate, and completely devoid of mistletoe, which is all the motivation Ethan needs to get back to his real life. Watching him try to navigate this world while desperately attempting to reconnect with Joyce (who doesn’t know him in this reality, obviously) is as heartwarming as it is ridiculous.
The humor ramps up with Ethan’s increasingly desperate attempts to prove he’s not crazy. Whether he’s showing up uninvited to Joyce’s community events or trying to bond with their kids, his awkward sincerity makes you root for him even harder. And let’s not forget the elevator operator/guardian angel figure, who drops cryptic hints like he’s auditioning for a Hallmark Twilight Zone spinoff.
The romance between Ethan and Joyce is surprisingly sweet, even in an alternate reality where she thinks he’s just some overly familiar executive. Their chemistry shines as Ethan realizes that the life he took for granted—complete with chaotic family breakfasts and mismatched ornaments on the tree—was the real dream all along.
The grand finale delivers all the Hallmark essentials: a heartfelt speech, a perfectly timed snowfall, and a kiss so magical it resets the timeline (and probably the electricity bill, given how many lights turn on when Ethan gets his life back). It’s cheesy, yes, but that’s why we’re here.
A Kiss Before Christmas is a fun, feel-good holiday movie with just the right amount of humor and heart. It’s perfect for anyone who’s ever wondered “what if?” during the holidays—or just loves watching James Denton and Teri Hatcher reunite in a story that feels like Desperate Housewives: The Festive Edition. Grab your cocoa, settle in, and enjoy this merry midlife crisis with a happy ending. 🎄❤️✨
