Movie Review: An Unexpected Christmas
Subtitle: “Fake Dating, Festive Chaos, and a Town That’s Way Too Invested.”
An Unexpected Christmas is Hallmark’s love letter to the time-honored rom-com tradition of pretending to be a couple, only to, surprise surprise, actually fall in love. Add a heaping dose of holiday magic, meddling family members, and enough small-town Christmas spirit to power a snow globe, and you’ve got a recipe for festive hilarity.
The story kicks off when Jamie (Tyler Hynes), a workaholic speechwriter, runs into his ex, Emily (Bethany Joy Lenz), at a train station. Through a series of very Hallmark-y mishaps (and Jamie’s complete inability to be honest), his family mistakes Emily for his current girlfriend. Instead of clearing things up, Jamie convinces Emily to play along and spend the holidays with his family, because what could possibly go wrong with that plan? Spoiler: Everything. And it’s glorious.
Bethany Joy Lenz’s Emily is whip-smart, quick-witted, and absolutely not here for Jamie’s nonsense, which makes her the perfect foil for Tyler Hynes’s lovable-but-flustered Jamie. Their chemistry is crackling from the start, with banter so sharp it could cut through a Christmas ribbon. Watching them navigate the absurdity of their fake relationship while dodging family questions is like watching a holiday-themed version of The Odd Couple.
The humor is non-stop, from Jamie’s increasingly elaborate attempts to sell the ruse (including a hilariously awkward story about how they “met”) to Emily’s barely concealed side-eye as she goes along with it all. The supporting cast, particularly Jamie’s overly enthusiastic family, amps up the comedy with their relentless holiday activities and shameless matchmaking efforts. Honestly, this family could run a Christmas boot camp—they’ve got enough traditions to fill a three-hour movie.
The small-town setting is peak Hallmark: cozy, snow-covered, and absolutely obsessed with Christmas. There’s a tree-lighting ceremony, a cookie-decorating contest, and even a Christmas karaoke night where Emily and Jamie perform a duet so charming it should come with its own mistletoe.
Of course, the movie hits all the classic rom-com beats. As Jamie and Emily spend more time together, the lines between fake and real start to blur, leading to some truly swoon-worthy moments. Whether they’re sneaking glances during family game night or sharing a surprisingly emotional conversation in front of the fire, you’ll be rooting for these two from start to finish.
The grand finale is everything you want in a Hallmark movie: a big romantic confession, a perfectly timed snowfall, and a kiss so sweet it could give you a sugar rush. By the end, the fake relationship has turned into the real deal, and you’ll be left grinning like a kid on Christmas morning.
An Unexpected Christmas is a laugh-out-loud, feel-good holiday rom-com that’s as charming as it is predictable. It’s perfect for anyone who loves fake dating tropes, festive shenanigans, and the idea that sometimes the best gifts are the ones you don’t see coming. 🎄❤️✨
