Movie Review: Christmas by Starlight
Subtitle: “Saving a Diner, Falling in Love, and Arguing Over Christmas Cookies.”
Christmas by Starlight is a Hallmark holiday delight that combines small-town charm, big-city drama, and just the right amount of festive bickering. It’s the story of a beloved family diner, a grumpy lawyer, and a Christmas miracle that somehow involves fake dating (because why not?).
The movie follows Annie (Kimberley Sustad), a cheery small-town woman whose family diner, The Starlight Café, is set to be demolished by a soulless corporation. Enter William (Paul Campbell), a lawyer for said corporation, whose perfectly tailored suits hide a man who clearly needs to discover the magic of Christmas. When Annie confronts William about the diner, their personalities clash harder than reindeer on a rooftop, but he agrees to help her... for a price. She has to pretend to be his girlfriend at fancy corporate events. Because that’s a thing.
Kimberley Sustad brings warmth and wit to Annie, a woman who could probably save the world with her optimism and festive decorating skills. Paul Campbell’s William is hilariously uptight, with a soft side that slowly emerges as Annie drags him into her whirlwind of holiday cheer. Together, they have the kind of chemistry that makes you wonder why they didn’t just start fake dating sooner.
The movie’s plot is predictably delightful. Annie and William navigate a series of increasingly festive hijinks, from planning a Christmas gala to decorating cookies in a scene that could double as a rom-com poster. Along the way, William starts to appreciate small-town life (and Annie, of course), while Annie learns that even corporate lawyers have hearts.
The supporting cast includes Annie’s family, who are so charmingly meddlesome they could have their own sitcom, and William’s corporate boss, who treats business like a war game but eventually softens because, well, it’s Hallmark. The Starlight Café itself feels like another character—a cozy, twinkling haven where every cup of cocoa comes with a side of life advice.
The humor comes naturally, with William’s awkward attempts at being festive providing plenty of laughs. Watching him try to navigate small-town traditions like caroling and tree decorating is like watching a cat try to swim: clumsy but endearing. Annie, meanwhile, radiates the kind of holiday energy that could melt even the iciest Scrooge.
The romance unfolds exactly as you’d expect—slowly, sweetly, and with just enough longing glances to make you cheer when they finally kiss under a perfectly timed snowfall. By the end, the diner is saved, William is redeemed, and you’re left feeling like you just drank a giant mug of holiday cheer.
Christmas by Starlight is the perfect blend of festive charm and rom-com absurdity. It’s a movie that knows exactly what it is and leans into the holiday tropes with giddy enthusiasm. Watch it when you’re in the mood for a cozy, feel-good story that proves love, community, and a little Christmas magic can solve just about anything—even corporate greed. 🎄❤️✨
