Movie Review: Christmas for Keeps
Subtitle: “Friends, Nostalgia, and More Hot Cocoa Than You Can Handle.”
Christmas for Keeps is Hallmark’s love letter to small-town reunions, where old friends gather to reminisce, rekindle, and, of course, save something in need of saving. It’s one our Hallmark movie list because it's a holiday movie packed with nostalgia, heart, and so many Christmas activities, you’ll wonder if these characters have jobs—or just endless free time for cookie decorating.
The story follows a group of childhood friends who return to their hometown after the passing of their beloved high school teacher, Mr. Massey. As they try to honor his memory, they realize they’ve drifted apart over the years and use the magic of Christmas (and a whole lot of holiday-themed bonding) to bring their lives—and their relationships—back together.
The cast is a merry mix of classic Hallmark archetypes: Avery (Christa B. Allen), the overachiever who secretly feels stuck; Ben (Ryan Rottman), the charming underdog who never left town; Sarah (Ashley Newbrough), the romantic realist; and Noah (Cardi Wong), the guy who’s just there to make everyone laugh. Together, they form the perfect ensemble for a movie about rediscovering what really matters—friendship, love, and who’s the best at snowman-building.
The humor comes from the group’s hilariously awkward attempts to recreate their childhood traditions. Watching a bunch of grown adults compete in a gingerbread house contest with the intensity of a reality TV finale is comedy gold. Add in some passive-aggressive Christmas karaoke and a snowball fight that turns into a full-blown war, and you’ve got a recipe for festive chaos.
Of course, there’s also romance, because no Hallmark movie is complete without it. Avery and Ben’s slow-burn chemistry is predictable but adorable, with plenty of lingering looks and heartfelt conversations under twinkling lights. By the time they finally kiss—probably surrounded by mistletoe and conveniently falling snow—you’ll be rooting for them like you’re part of the friend group. A must for our Hallmark movie list.
The supporting cast includes meddling townsfolk, adorable kids, and one extremely wise old neighbor who seems to know exactly what everyone needs at all times. (Seriously, does Hallmark have a factory that mass-produces these wise neighbors?) And let’s not forget the town itself, which is basically a Christmas card come to life, complete with perfectly timed snowfalls and decorations that would make Santa jealous.
The grand finale is exactly what you’d expect: the friends pull off a heartwarming tribute to Mr. Massey, everyone learns an important life lesson, and love triumphs over everything—including bad karaoke. It’s cheesy, yes, but also deeply satisfying, like finding the last marshmallow in your cocoa just when you thought it was gone.
Christmas for Keeps is a funny, feel-good holiday movie that leans into its nostalgia while delivering plenty of laughs and heart. It’s perfect for anyone who loves small-town charm, ensemble casts, and the idea that Christmas really is the best time to reconnect with old friends—and maybe an old flame or two. Grab your cocoa, your childhood scrapbooks, and settle in for a holiday hug in movie form in this one off our Hallmark movie list. 🎄❤️🎶
