Movie Review: Christmas in Montana
Subtitle: "Where Love is as Big as the Sky, and Subplots are as Mysterious as Cows in the Snow."
If you’ve ever dreamed of escaping to a picturesque ranch for Christmas and falling for a rugged cowboy, Christmas in Montana is here to fulfill your fantasy with all the subtlety of a sleigh bell chorus. It’s Hallmark’s answer to the question: “What if Yellowstone had fewer cattle drives and more twinkly lights?”
The story centers on Sara (Kellie Martin), a big-city financial advisor sent to Montana to help save a struggling family ranch. Because when you’re in Montana, finance is best discussed over hot cocoa and the occasional horseback ride. Enter Travis (Colin Ferguson), the ranch owner who looks like he stepped straight off the cover of Country Living magazine. He’s charming, rugged, and so good with his daughter that you’ll start wondering why Sara even bothers going back to the city at all.
From the moment Sara sets foot in Montana, you know exactly where this is going. The film throws every Hallmark trope at the screen with gleeful abandon:
- The big-city woman needing a lesson in small-town values? Check.
- A snowstorm conveniently trapping people together? Absolutely.
- Horse rides through scenic, snow-covered fields? Oh, you bet.
What makes Christmas in Montana special, though, is its commitment to blending holiday cheer with ranch life. One minute, Sara and Travis are wrangling finances, and the next, they’re decorating a tree in the barn because apparently livestock also deserve Christmas spirit. Meanwhile, Sara’s daughter helps bond with Travis’s daughter over crafts, proving once again that kids in these movies are the ultimate wingmen.
Now, let’s talk about the true star of the film: Montana. This movie makes Montana look so breathtakingly beautiful that you’ll want to book a flight immediately—assuming you’re okay with spending Christmas surrounded by more cows than people. The sweeping landscapes, cozy cabins, and never-ending supply of plaid shirts create an ambiance so festive it almost distracts you from the fact that the ranch’s financial crisis gets solved with a solution so simple you wonder why Sara even had to fly out there.
The romance? Predictable but adorable. Sara and Travis are so sweet together that you won’t even mind when they stare meaningfully at each other for what feels like ten minutes straight while the snow falls in slow motion. Their banter is endearing, their chemistry is solid, and their shared love of ranch life is enough to make you consider swapping your Netflix subscription for a saddle.
Of course, there are a few unintentionally hilarious moments. For example, the ranch’s financial woes are somehow resolved without anyone breaking a sweat—because in Hallmark-land, numbers are as magical as Santa’s sleigh. Also, every secondary character is so relentlessly cheerful it’s as if they’ve been sipping eggnog 24/7.
Final Verdict: 4/5 cowboy hats. Christmas in Montana is the perfect blend of holiday cheese and rustic charm, with just enough Montana scenery to make you forget it’s probably freezing outside. Watch it for the swoon-worthy cowboy, stay for the heartwarming moments, and maybe reconsider your career path—because apparently saving ranches looks way more fun than office work.
