Movie Review: Christmas with the Darlings
Subtitle: “When Babysitting Turns to Love, and Everyone’s Last Name is Fancy.”
Christmas with the Darlings is Hallmark’s charming holiday romp about love, family, and the unexpected romance that comes from a well-timed nanny gig. It’s equal parts cozy and absurd, with just enough twinkling lights and snow to make you forget that the plot revolves around unpaid babysitting for rich kids.
The story follows Jessica (Katrina Law), an ambitious executive assistant who’s about to leave her high-powered job to pursue her dreams (what those dreams are, exactly, remains vague). Before she can fully step into her new life, she agrees to help her boss’s brother, Max (Carlo Marks), take care of his orphaned nieces and nephew during the holidays. Because nothing says qualified caregiver like “I organize spreadsheets.”
Katrina Law brings warmth and humor to Jessica, who is somehow both wildly overqualified for nannying and completely underprepared for the chaos of three kids. Carlo Marks plays Max with all the charisma you’d expect from a Hallmark leading man—rugged, charming, and conveniently single. Together, they navigate family drama, holiday traditions, and the growing realization that they might just be perfect for each other.
The movie leans into every classic Hallmark trope:
- Snowball fights that conveniently end with romantic eye contact.
- Cookie decorating scenes where flour gets everywhere but no one seems to mind.
- And heartwarming moments with kids who are so precocious they could probably manage their own inheritance if left to it.
The kids, by the way, are absolutely delightful. They’re mischievous without being annoying, adorable without being cloying, and perfectly skilled at nudging Jessica and Max together. Whether they’re scheming to make Christmas perfect or staging a surprise concert (yes, really), they somehow manage to steal every scene they’re in.
The romance between Jessica and Max is as predictable as a Hallmark movie snowstorm, but that’s part of the charm. Their chemistry builds through a series of increasingly festive activities, including tree decorating and heartfelt talks under twinkling lights. By the time they share their big romantic moment, you’ll be rooting for them as though you didn’t see it coming from the opening credits.
The setting is peak Hallmark: a lavish mansion that somehow feels cozy and a small-town community that rallies around Christmas like it’s an Olympic event. Every corner of the screen is filled with decorations, holiday cheer, and people who apparently have no other obligations in December besides celebrating Christmas and being delightfully nosy.
Christmas with the Darlings is a sweet, funny, and unapologetically cheesy holiday film that delivers exactly what you expect from a Hallmark movie. It’s perfect for anyone who loves feel-good romances, adorable kids, and the idea that love can bloom over gingerbread and glitter. Watch it with a plate of cookies and prepare to embrace the holiday magic—Darling-style. 🎄❤️✨
