Review

Movie Review: Eight Gifts of Hanukkah
Subtitle: “Love, Latkes, and a Mysterious Mensch.”

Eight Gifts of Hanukkah is Hallmark’s charming dive into the world of menorahs, matchmaking, and secret admirers. It’s the kind of holiday rom-com that proves you don’t need a Christmas tree to deliver festive magic—just a well-timed string of thoughtful gifts and a lot of awkward glances.

The story follows Sara (Inbar Lavi), an optometrist who’s trying to balance her busy life with her love for Hanukkah traditions. When she starts receiving anonymous gifts each night of the holiday, she embarks on a mission to uncover the identity of her secret admirer. Could it be the charming doctor? The thoughtful friend? Or is it someone so obvious even the dreidel could figure it out? Spoiler: It’s totally the latter.

Inbar Lavi’s Sara is effortlessly likable, bringing a mix of charm, humor, and “why can’t I figure this out?” energy to her quest for love. Jake Epstein’s Daniel, her best friend with a not-so-secret crush, is peak Hallmark hero material: sweet, supportive, and the kind of guy who clearly bought eight thoughtful gifts while googling “how to confess your feelings during Hanukkah.” Their chemistry is as warm as a freshly fried latke and just as satisfying.

The humor comes from Sara’s increasingly ridiculous attempts to deduce her admirer’s identity. Watching her interrogate her friends and overanalyze every gift—ranging from jewelry to a very symbolic candle—is pure comedy gold. Meanwhile, Daniel’s “I’m totally not jealous” face every time she suspects someone else is a running gag that never gets old.

The supporting cast includes Sara’s hilariously meddling family, who seem more invested in her love life than their own Hanukkah celebrations. Their nosy but well-meaning antics add to the festive chaos, especially when they start dropping not-so-subtle hints about who they think Sara should be dating.

The movie also leans into its Hanukkah setting, showcasing traditions like lighting the menorah, spinning dreidels, and consuming enough fried food to make your doctor send a follow-up email. The holiday feels authentic and cozy, adding depth to the story while still delivering all the rom-com tropes we know and love.

The romance builds slowly but sweetly, with Daniel struggling to reveal his feelings while Sara fumbles her way through the most obvious mystery in Hallmark history. By the time the eighth night rolls around, complete with a grand romantic gesture and the world’s most predictable reveal, you’ll be rooting for them like they’re the last latke on the plate.

Eight Gifts of Hanukkah is a funny, feel-good holiday movie that blends humor, heart, and just the right amount of schmaltz. It’s perfect for anyone who loves a good love story, family traditions, and the idea that the best gifts aren’t things—they’re the people who know you better than anyone else. Watch it with latkes, sufganiyot, and maybe a glass of wine to toast to Hanukkah love. 🕎✨❤️
