Movie Review: Merry & Bright
Subtitle: “Candy Canes, Corporate Shenanigans, and Christmas Chemistry.”
Merry & Bright delivers the quintessential Hallmark experience: predictable romance, charming small-town vibes, and enough holiday spirit to power a thousand Christmas lights. It’s the story of Cate (Jodie Sweetin), the fiercely passionate CEO of her family’s candy cane company, who’s determined to keep her business afloat despite mounting financial woes. Enter Gabe (Andrew Walker), a big-city corporate consultant who’s been sent to help Cate turn her candy canes into cash.
Naturally, sparks fly—and not just from Cate’s overworked factory machinery. Cate thinks Gabe is there to destroy her family legacy with soulless ideas like peppermint-flavored protein bars, while Gabe sees Cate as a stubborn traditionalist clinging to an outdated candy empire. Spoiler alert: they’re both right, and also very wrong, because love is about finding common ground—preferably covered in snow and twinkling lights.
Cate and Gabe’s chemistry is textbook Hallmark: slow burn with just the right amount of awkward banter. Whether they’re debating the merits of candy canes versus trendy health snacks or sharing a heartwarming moment over a hot cocoa bar, you can practically see the mistletoe hovering above them. Cate’s passion for her business is admirable, though her refusal to innovate is almost comical—because really, how many people are buying industrial amounts of candy canes outside of Hallmark movies?
Gabe, for his part, plays the classic Hallmark hero: a city guy with a heart of gold and zero understanding of small-town Christmas traditions. Watching him try to navigate holiday baking, tree decorating, and Cate’s matchmaking mom is delightful. Speaking of her mom, she’s the movie’s secret weapon, expertly nudging Cate and Gabe together with the subtlety of a marching band.
The supporting cast is a delight, including the quirky candy factory staff who somehow have time to churn out miles of peppermint sticks and attend every festive town event. And let’s not forget the townspeople, who treat Cate’s candy canes like a sacred relic. The entire town rallies around the idea that saving Merry & Bright is about more than business—it’s about preserving the spirit of Christmas. It’s over-the-top, but in a way that will make you smile through the sugar rush.
Some of the movie’s best laughs come from its unintentional hilarity. Gabe’s initial proposal to "modernize" the company involves an overly serious PowerPoint about candy trends, as if the future of humanity depends on artisanal peppermint. Cate’s shock at Gabe’s complete lack of Christmas skills—he’s never even built a gingerbread house!—is treated like a personal betrayal. And the climactic moment, where the company’s fate hinges on a single Christmas Eve pitch meeting, is Hallmark logic at its finest.
Merry & Bright is like a holiday candy cane itself: sweet, simple, and just the right amount of cheesy. Watching Cate and Gabe find love and save the day will leave you grinning and maybe even craving a peppermint snack. It’s Hallmark doing what Hallmark does best, and honestly, who doesn’t want a little extra holiday sugar in their life?
