Review

Movie Review: Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Sweater
Subtitle: “Ugly Sweaters, Adorable Romance, and a Lesson in Festive Fashion.”

Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Sweater might be the most Hallmark title ever, and the movie itself lives up to its promise of cozy, festive absurdity. It’s a rom-com about love, redemption, and the undeniable allure of ugly knitwear. Spoiler: Despite the warning in the title, you will absolutely root for the sweater guy.

The story follows Maggie (Ashley Williams), a single mom who’s determined to make Christmas magical—even if it means accidentally injuring a total stranger with a rogue Christmas tree. Enter Lucas (Niall Matter), a handsome, grumpy architect whose plans to spend Christmas alone are derailed when Maggie ropes him into her holiday whirlwind. Oh, and he’s wearing a truly heinous Christmas sweater when they meet, setting the tone for their awkward-but-charming relationship.

Ashley Williams plays Maggie with her signature quirky energy, delivering lines like she’s auditioning to be the next Santa Claus. Maggie is endlessly optimistic, even when she’s juggling holiday chaos and trying not to fall for the grumpiest man in town. Niall Matter’s Lucas is the perfect foil—initially annoyed, then reluctantly charmed, and finally all-in on Maggie’s relentless holiday spirit. His transformation from Scrooge to sweatered sweetheart is both predictable and heartwarming.

The sweater itself deserves its own IMDb page. It’s garish, oversized, and somehow manages to represent all of Lucas’s emotional baggage in knit form. By the end of the movie, you’ll find yourself weirdly attached to it—proof that even bad fashion choices can have a redemption arc.

The plot is classic Hallmark: Maggie convinces Lucas to help her with holiday activities, from tree decorating to volunteering at a local Christmas festival. Along the way, they bond over shared laughs, snowball fights, and heartfelt conversations about life, love, and why Lucas hates Christmas sweaters. (Spoiler: There’s a tragic sweater-related backstory. Probably.)

Highlights of the movie include:
- Maggie’s over-the-top Christmas enthusiasm, which borders on professional-level cheerleading.
- Lucas’s dry humor as he reluctantly agrees to every festive activity Maggie throws at him.
- The fact that the title warns against kissing sweater guys, yet the entire movie is a countdown to exactly that moment.

The romance builds slowly but sweetly, with plenty of Hallmark-approved near-misses and meaningful gazes. By the time they finally share their first kiss—while Lucas is wearing yet another questionable sweater—you’ll be grinning like you just unwrapped a puppy on Christmas morning.

The supporting cast adds plenty of charm, from Maggie’s adorable daughter, who might as well be Cupid in snow boots, to a group of nosy townsfolk who clearly ship Maggie and Lucas harder than anyone. Even the local Christmas festival feels like a character, complete with twinkling lights, caroling, and conveniently placed mistletoe.

Never Kiss a Man in a Christmas Sweater is exactly what you want from a Hallmark movie: sweet, silly, and unapologetically festive. It’s the perfect holiday escape for anyone who loves awkward meet-cutes, slow-burn romance, and the idea that even the ugliest sweater can lead to happily-ever-after. Grab some cocoa, put on your own ugly sweater, and enjoy this merry little love story. 🎄❤️🧶
