Review

Movie Review: One December Night
Subtitle: “When Exes, Family Drama, and Christmas Carols Collide.”

One December Night is Hallmark’s take on holiday nostalgia, family drama, and the kind of romantic tension that can only happen when you’re forced to work with your ex (who’s also your bandmate) at the family Christmas concert. Because nothing says “holiday cheer” like awkward reunions and slightly off-key carols.

The plot follows Charlie (Peter Gallagher) and Grace (Dee Wallace), two former rock bandmates who haven’t spoken in years—because nothing says romantic tragedy like a band breakup fueled by unspoken feelings and a failed Christmas concert. When Charlie’s son Luke (Paul Campbell), who’s all grown up and definitely not over his parents’ unresolved issues, gets them to reunite to perform a charity concert, the stage is set for holiday hijinks, emotional healing, and a lot of unresolved rock ‘n’ roll drama.

Peter Gallagher’s Charlie is the grizzled ex-rockstar trying to rediscover his Christmas spirit—preferably without dealing with his past mistakes. Dee Wallace’s Grace is the fierce and slightly sassy ex-bandmate who’s determined to keep her cool, even if she has to dodge Charlie’s charm every five minutes. Their chemistry is delightfully awkward, with just enough lingering glances and unresolved issues to make you root for them to get over their ex-band drama and admit they still have feelings for each other.

The humor comes from watching two people with zero interest in rekindling their romance being forced into intimate spaces—like a stage where they have to sing together—because nothing says “let’s work through our problems” like duets. The backstage moments of clumsy rehearsals and accidental song lyric mishaps are pure Hallmark gold. Add in a little “I’m definitely not still in love with you” denial, and you've got a recipe for holiday chaos.

The family dynamics are chef’s kiss Hallmark. Luke, their adult son, spends most of the movie desperately trying to convince his parents that they were meant to be together—without coming off like a meddling romantic. The rest of the family seems to have no interest in this subplot, and instead focuses entirely on making the concert happen, with enough Christmas spirit to fill a stadium. There’s also a dog—because of course, there’s a dog. It’s a Hallmark movie.

The romance is as predictable as the snow falling outside—gruff ex-couple finally remembers why they loved each other in the first place, after some forced moments of awkwardness, deep conversations, and random snowball fights that somehow lead to revelations. By the time they share that first “we finally get it” kiss, you’ll be grinning like you’ve just opened your holiday presents.

The grand finale is exactly what you’d expect: the concert goes off without a hitch, Charlie and Grace rekindle their romance, and everyone sings carols as snow falls—perfectly timed, of course. It’s cheesy, predictable, and exactly the kind of holiday magic you came for.

One December Night is a funny, feel-good holiday movie that mixes music, love, and just the right amount of family drama. It’s perfect for anyone who’s ever had to face their past—and their ex—under the guise of a Christmas concert. Grab some cocoa, belt out a few carols, and let the holiday magic do its thing. 🎄🎶❤️
