Review

Movie Review: One Royal Holiday
Subtitle: “When a Queen Meets a Casserole, and Love is Served Hot.”

One Royal Holiday is Hallmark’s delightful romp through snowy New England, where royal drama meets small-town coziness, and a woman with a casserole proves that Christmas truly is the great equalizer. It’s a festive rom-com about traditions, tiaras, and the magic of flannel.

The story follows Anna (Laura Osnes), a cheerful nurse with enough holiday spirit to light up a Rockefeller tree. While driving through a snowstorm, she offers shelter to a stranded mother and son, only to discover they’re royalty. Yes, royalty. Like, a real prince and queen. Enter James (Aaron Tveit), the brooding Prince of Galwick, who doesn’t believe in fun, Christmas, or wearing anything that isn’t perfectly tailored. Cue Anna dragging him through every small-town holiday tradition imaginable until his icy royal demeanor melts like butter on a fresh-baked roll.

Laura Osnes is absolutely radiant as Anna, the kind of heroine who can charm both a prince and the audience without breaking a sweat. Aaron Tveit’s James is your classic grumpy royal: initially annoyed by Anna’s enthusiasm but secretly loving every second of her holiday takeover. Their chemistry grows slowly, building through cookie decorating, sleigh rides, and a few very meaningful snowball fights.

The small-town setting is as Hallmark as it gets. Anna’s hometown is a Christmas wonderland full of twinkling lights, friendly neighbors, and more holiday events than any one town should legally be allowed to host. From tree lightings to gingerbread house contests, there’s always something happening—and James always seems to be reluctantly roped into it.

The movie’s humor shines brightest in its fish-out-of-water moments. Watching a royal family navigate the quirks of small-town America is pure gold. The Queen (played by Victoria Clark) steals scenes with her deadpan reactions to things like casseroles and overly friendly strangers. Meanwhile, James trying to figure out how to build a snowman is the kind of awkwardly adorable moment that will have you grinning like a kid on Christmas morning.

Of course, the romance is as predictable as it is charming. By the time James and Anna find themselves dancing under the glow of the town’s Christmas lights, you’ll be rooting for them harder than the locals rooting for Anna’s famous holiday casserole in the bake-off. Their eventual kiss is perfectly timed with a snowstorm, because this is Hallmark, and meteorological miracles are part of the deal.

The supporting cast adds plenty of festive flair, from Anna’s meddling friends to the royal security team who spend most of the movie looking bemused by the whole situation. And let’s not forget the town itself, which somehow feels like a character in its own right—always ready to stage another impromptu holiday event or provide a cozy backdrop for love.

One Royal Holiday is a sweet, funny, and totally predictable holiday escape that leans into every Hallmark trope with unapologetic glee. It’s perfect for anyone who’s ever dreamed of accidentally meeting a prince—or just loves the idea that love, like Christmas, can be found in the most unexpected places. Grab some cocoa, put on your coziest flannel, and enjoy this royal holiday treat. 🎄👑❤️
