Movie Review: Our Christmas Mural
Subtitle: "When Christmas, Art, and Way Too Many Holiday Mishaps Collide in the Most Hilariously Predictable Way."
“Our Christmas Mural” is Hallmark’s latest attempt at proving that art and Christmas magic can make the perfect combo—except in this case, it’s more about way too many paint splatters than perfect holiday cheer. If you’ve ever wondered, "What if a small town decided to paint a Christmas mural, but way too much drama, way too many family secrets, and a touch of accidental romance got mixed in?"—then this movie is exactly what you’ve been looking for. Spoiler alert: It’s both chaotic and heartwarming, with just enough mistletoe to make you believe in Christmas magic.
The plot follows Maggie (played by Jodie Sweetin, because who else can play “grumpy but secretly festive” with so much charm?), an overworked art teacher who’s definitely not in the mood for Christmas this year. She’s been tasked with leading the town’s holiday mural project—because every small town has a “town mural project”—but she’s way too busy and too cynical about the holidays to appreciate what it could mean for the community. Instead of embracing the festive spirit, Maggie’s trying to finish her lesson plans and keep her life together while everything around her is slowly turning into a Christmas miracle.
Enter Evan (played by Cameron Mathison, who is perfect for the role of “handsome, charming guy who’s secretly into Christmas but doesn’t know it yet”), a local contractor who’s tasked with helping Maggie with the mural project. He’s definitely not interested in spending his holidays painting festive decorations, but he’s definitely interested in Maggie. Naturally, Maggie is “definitely not falling for him”—because nothing says “I’m too busy for love” like accidentally getting paint on your face while spending every waking moment with someone who’s just too cute for words. As you can guess, these two are definitely going to fall in love—and it’s going to happen in the most predictable way possible, paint splatters and all.
The comedy comes from the utter chaos of trying to paint the perfect Christmas mural while dealing with way too many random problems—like paint spills, miscommunications, and the town’s obsession with making everything “perfect” for Christmas. Every time Maggie and Evan try to work on the mural, they find themselves in way too many romantic moments—whether it’s accidentally decorating a tree together or stumbling into a way-too-adorable snowball fight. Watching Maggie try to keep it together while Christmas chaos continues around her is like watching someone try to put together a gingerbread house without following the instructions—chaotic, funny, and a little bit messy but endearing all the same.
And then there’s the art. The mural itself is, of course, a “grand gesture” that gets more perfectly complicated as the movie goes on. Every time Maggie tries to make things “perfect”, the mural turns into something that’s more symbolic of embracing the messiness of Christmas than anything else. I mean, what’s a Hallmark mural without a little too much glitter and way too many painted reindeer? Watching Maggie’s attempts to make the mural “look perfect” only to realize that the best murals are the ones made with heart is a delightful yet hilariously predictable Christmas lesson.
Of course, there’s the romance. Maggie and Evan’s “we’re not falling in love” routine is so obvious that even the paintbrushes are trying to nudge them together. Whether it’s accidentally sharing a way-too-sweet kiss after finishing the mural or laughing over a ridiculously charming holiday mishap, every moment they share only makes their growing attraction way too obvious. You just know they’re going to end up together—and yet, you can’t help but laugh at how cute they are while trying to pretend they’re not into each other.
The grand finale? Predictably heartwarming, of course. After way too many Christmas disasters, romantic misunderstandings, and way too many “I’m definitely not falling in love with you” moments, Maggie and Evan finally realize they’re totally in love. Of course, they share the perfect kiss in front of the perfect Christmas mural, surrounded by the perfectly decorated town that’s finally embraced the chaos of the season. Everyone realizes that Christmas isn’t about making things perfect—it’s about embracing the messiness and finding love in the middle of it all.
“Our Christmas Mural” is the ultimate mix of holiday chaos, way too much art, and a romance that’s as predictable as it is heartwarming. If you love watching way too many holiday mishaps, art projects that go completely off the rails, and a romance that sprinkles in just the right amount of Christmas magic, then grab your coziest blanket, your favorite holiday snack, and get ready for a movie that will have you laughing, swooning, and maybe even feeling inspired to paint your own Christmas masterpiece. 🎄🎨💋
