Movie Review: The Christmas Club
Subtitle: “When Fate, Love, and Holiday Kindness Collide in the Most Hallmark Way Possible.”
The Christmas Club takes the concept of "paying it forward" and wraps it in a bow of festive romance, with just enough holiday cheese to make even the grumpiest Scrooge crack a smile. It’s a story of serendipity, snowflakes, and the undeniable power of a small-town Christmas vibe—delivered with a heavy dose of twinkly lights.
The movie follows Olivia (Elizabeth Mitchell), a driven dance teacher with an overflowing schedule, and Edward (Cameron Mathison), a dashing single dad who’s somehow always free for holiday activities. The two strangers meet when they both stop to help an elderly woman named Gertrude, whose money blows away in a gust of holiday wind (because apparently, wallets don’t exist in Hallmark Land). Together, Olivia and Edward decide to cover Gertrude’s lost cash, setting off a chain reaction of feel-good moments and, naturally, romantic sparks.
Elizabeth Mitchell plays Olivia with the kind of warmth that makes you wonder why her character doesn’t have a Hallmark-friendly name like “Holly” or “Joy.” Cameron Mathison’s Edward is the quintessential Hallmark hero: kind, handsome, and perfectly capable of hanging Christmas lights without breaking a sweat. Watching them navigate their growing attraction while doing a series of increasingly festive activities is both charming and hilariously over-the-top.
The titular “Christmas Club” refers to a savings account Olivia’s mom used to have, where she’d stash money all year for holiday gifts. This simple concept somehow turns into the central metaphor of the movie, driving home the idea that kindness is the ultimate Christmas currency. Prepare for a lot of speeches about the importance of giving, most of which are delivered in front of fireplaces with strategic snowflake cutouts.
Unintentionally funny moments abound, including:
- Gertrude’s entire plotline, which feels like the beginning of a caper movie. Who carries that much cash in the middle of winter?
- Edward’s ability to drop everything in his life to wander the city doing holiday-themed activities with Olivia, as though single parenting is a part-time gig.
- A scene where Olivia teaches Edward to dance, which is somehow both romantic and slightly reminiscent of a high school gym class.
Of course, the romance is the main draw here, and it’s as predictable as it is heartwarming. From cookie decorating to helping Gertrude bake (because of course they’re still helping her), Olivia and Edward’s chemistry grows until the inevitable big kiss in a perfectly timed snowstorm. You’ll find yourself rooting for them even while laughing at the absurdity of how many coincidences have to happen to get them together.
The supporting cast includes the quirky townsfolk you’d expect, all of whom seem to exist solely to make sure Olivia and Edward end up together. From a wise coffee shop owner to a surprisingly invested toy store clerk, everyone is 100% on board with their love story—even if it’s only been, like, three days.
The Christmas Club is the kind of movie that knows exactly what it is: a warm, fuzzy holiday escape where love, kindness, and a little bit of magic make everything right. It’s not deep, but it’s deeply satisfying—like the cinematic equivalent of a candy cane. Watch it with a plate of cookies and let yourself get swept up in the festive feel-good vibes, no questions asked. 🎄💌❄️
