Movie Review: "The Love Club: Lauren's Dream" (2023)
Subtitle: "When Hallmark Movies Dream of Being Hallmark Holiday Movies, But Forget to Wake Up"
If you’ve ever wondered what happens when a Hallmark movie tries to be a Hallmark holiday movie but forgets to bring the holiday spirit, The Love Club: Lauren’s Dream is here to answer that burning question. Spoiler alert: it’s like watching a snowman melt in July—confusing, slightly sad, but oddly entertaining.
The plot follows Lauren, a small-town baker with a heart of gold and a wardrobe straight out of a Pinterest board. She dreams of opening her own bakery but is too busy falling into contrived misunderstandings with a ruggedly handsome stranger who, of course, has a secret connection to her past. Cue the dramatic gasps and the obligatory montage of flour fights and heart-to-hearts over steaming mugs of cocoa.
Here’s the twist: the movie almost feels like a Hallmark holiday movie, but instead of Christmas lights and mistletoe, we get… a vague autumnal aesthetic? There’s a pumpkin or two, some leaves falling in slow motion, and a scene where Lauren wears a scarf that’s clearly trying too hard. It’s like the filmmakers said, “Let’s make it cozy but not too cozy, because we’re saving the tinsel for the sequel.”
The dialogue is peak Hallmark movies cheese. At one point, Lauren says, “Sometimes, the sweetest dreams are the ones you bake yourself,” and I swear I heard my microwave ding in solidarity. The love interest, meanwhile, delivers lines like, “You’re the frosting to my cupcake,” which is either romantic or a cry for help—I’m still not sure.
The supporting cast is a delightful mix of quirky best friends, nosy neighbors, and a precocious child who somehow knows more about love than the adults. There’s also a subplot involving a rival bakery that feels like it was written by someone who once Googled “conflict” but didn’t click on any links.
In the end, The Love Club: Lauren’s Dream is exactly what you’d expect: predictable, wholesome, and just cheesy enough to make you crave a grilled cheese sandwich. It’s not quite a Hallmark holiday movie, but it’s close enough to make you wonder if the producers were one candy cane short of a full stocking.
Rating: 3 out of 5 scarves that definitely don’t match the season. Perfect for when you need to turn off your brain and pretend you’re in a world where the biggest problem is whether your cinnamon rolls are flaky enough to win over a hunky stranger.
