Movie Review: Unlocking Christmas
Subtitle: “Puzzles, Love, and the Most Festive Key Collection Ever.”

Unlocking Christmas is Hallmark’s charmingly absurd attempt to turn an escape room into a romantic holiday adventure. It’s a movie about mysterious keys, nosy neighbors, and two people slowly falling in love while solving riddles that feel like they came straight out of a festive National Treasure.

The story begins when Kate (Taylor Cole), a cheerful med school graduate, and Kevin (Steve Lund), a brooding military man, each receive cryptic holiday cards with a key attached. The cards lead them on a scavenger hunt orchestrated by a meddling neighbor who apparently has too much time on her hands. Along the way, Kate and Kevin’s paths collide, and they realize the greatest mystery isn’t the hunt—it’s how they haven’t fallen for each other sooner.

Taylor Cole’s Kate is everything you want in a Hallmark heroine: upbeat, resourceful, and surprisingly good at deciphering cryptic messages. Steve Lund’s Kevin is her perfect foil: skeptical, stoic, and hiding just enough emotional depth to make you swoon when he finally opens up. Their chemistry builds over a series of increasingly festive puzzles, from deciphering clues at a Christmas market to solving riddles while decorating cookies.

The mystery itself is delightfully ridiculous. The clues are scattered around their quaint little town, leading them to places like an antique shop (owned by someone who definitely knows what’s going on but isn’t saying) and a tree-lighting ceremony that just happens to feature a big romantic moment. By the end, you’ll stop caring about the logistics of the scavenger hunt and just enjoy the ride—because who doesn’t love watching two attractive people bond over a shared love of riddles and gingerbread?

Highlights include:
- Kevin’s constant confusion over why Kate is so enthusiastic about everything, especially when she drags him into a snowball fight mid-puzzle.
- The clues, which are somehow both obvious and impossible, leaving you wondering if they were written by Santa or Sherlock Holmes.
- A hilariously dramatic moment where the final key unlocks something so sentimental that even Kevin gets misty-eyed.

The small-town setting is Hallmark at its finest: cozy coffee shops, twinkling lights, and neighbors who are way too invested in Kate and Kevin’s love story. Speaking of neighbors, the orchestrator of the scavenger hunt deserves her own spin-off. She’s the true MVP, delivering cryptic smiles and not-so-subtle nudges like Cupid with a clipboard.

The romance unfolds predictably but sweetly, with plenty of lingering glances and almost-kisses in front of roaring fires. By the time Kate and Kevin finally crack the last clue—and their emotional walls—you’ll be rooting for them harder than the town rooting for their annual Christmas festival to go off without a hitch.

Unlocking Christmas is the perfect holiday movie for anyone who loves puzzles, romance, and the idea that a set of mysterious keys could lead to true love. It’s light, fluffy, and packed with enough holiday cheer to make you forget how wildly impractical the whole premise is. Grab some cocoa, brush up on your riddle-solving skills, and enjoy this merry little mystery. 🎄🔑❤️
