We Met in December
Love at First Layover, or How Missing Your Flight Can Improve Your Dating Life
We Met in December is exactly what happens when Hallmark movies look at airport chaos and say, “You know what? This could be romantic.” The film begins with two strangers stuck on a layover that’s so magical you’d think O’Hare was secretly sponsored by the North Pole. They share one enchanted evening, part ways without exchanging numbers — because apparently phones don’t exist in Hallmark holiday movies — and then spend the next hour and a half trying to relocate each other in a city of nearly three million people.
The leads have chemistry so warm it could defrost an entire Midwest winter, which is helpful, because Chicago in December is basically a wind tunnel designed by an angry snowman. Their romantic quest involves holiday markets, twinkling lights, and a shocking lack of frostbite. Meanwhile, the supporting characters offer that classic Hallmark mix of unsolicited advice and uncanny intuition, as if they’ve all read the script and are politely waiting for the couple to catch up.
Filmed in Ottawa pretending to be Chicago (a classic Hallmark move), the movie never quite hides the fact that every street looks suspiciously clean for a city that usually freezes solid by Thanksgiving. But who cares? The romance is sweet, the jokes are gentle, and the only real villain is air travel.
All in all, We Met in December is the perfect watch if you love cozy coincidences, festive meet-cutes, and the belief that destiny is just one missed flight away. It’s charming, silly, and so deeply unrealistic that you’ll find yourself smiling anyway — exactly what Hallmark holiday movies are for.
