A Christmas Duet (2019): A Review with Harmony and Hilarity

If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if A Star Is Born swapped its gritty drama for Christmas carols and a copious amount of flannel, A Christmas Duet is your answer. It’s a tale of lost love, second chances, and holiday cheer so thick it could clog a snowblower.

The movie stars Chaley Rose as Avery, a former pop sensation who left her glittery music career to run a quaint inn in a town that looks suspiciously like a Hallmark set (spoiler: it totally is). Avery’s big hit “Wouldn’t Be Christmas” is still the go-to tune for every holiday playlist in this universe, even though she’s traded fame for an endless to-do list and a suspiciously stress-free small-business owner vibe.

Enter Jesse (Rome Flynn), Avery’s ex-singing partner—and naturally, her ex-boyfriend. Jesse shows up with the kind of timing that only exists in Hallmark-land, just as the inn is prepping for the town’s big Christmas Festival. He’s got charisma, a killer smile, and a tragic backstory that’s as deep as a kiddie pool, but hey, it’s Christmas. We’re here for vibes, not depth.

The film’s central conflict revolves around whether Avery and Jesse can reunite—professionally and romantically—in time for the festival’s big performance. Spoiler: They totally can. But not before the obligatory misunderstandings, heartfelt apologies, and one too many montages of them decorating cookies or walking through impossibly picturesque snow-covered streets.

The town itself is a Hallmark fever dream, complete with a mayor who seems to think Christmas festivals are more important than basic governance. The supporting cast includes quirky townsfolk whose sole purpose is to spout holiday wisdom and give knowing winks whenever Avery and Jesse are in the same room. It’s charming, but also a little unnerving—like, does anyone in this town have a life outside of meddling?

The music, as the title promises, is the star of the show. Avery and Jesse’s duet is genuinely catchy, and by the end of the movie, you’ll find yourself humming it despite yourself. (Be warned: it may haunt you well into January.) Chaley Rose and Rome Flynn have undeniable chemistry, and their performances are as smooth as a peppermint mocha.

Is the movie predictable? Absolutely. Does it matter? Not one bit. Watching A Christmas Duet is like sipping hot cocoa with an extra shot of whipped cream—it’s indulgent, unnecessary, and exactly what you need to survive the holiday season.

In the end, A Christmas Duet delivers what it promises: a sweet, musical love story wrapped in tinsel and sprinkled with just the right amount of cheese. It’s the perfect choice for anyone who’s ever dreamed of rekindling romance while wearing coordinating Christmas sweaters. Just don’t be surprised if you suddenly feel the urge to belt out a duet of your own. 🎵🎄
