Movie Review: Christmas in Vienna
Subtitle: “Strudel, Strings, and Some Serious Holiday Chemistry.”
Christmas in Vienna is Hallmark’s love letter to the holiday season, classical music, and the kind of magical European charm that makes you want to pack your bags and move immediately. It’s a romantic whirlwind of snowy streets, waltzes, and two ridiculously attractive people who somehow need an entire movie to realize they’re perfect for each other.
The story follows Jess (Sarah Drew), a violinist on the brink of a midlife career crisis, who travels to Vienna for a special Christmas concert. Jess is all about music but feeling a little meh about life—until she meets Mark (Brennan Elliott), a widowed diplomat and full-time hot dad. Their paths cross thanks to Mark’s adorable, overly precocious kids, who clearly inherited their matchmaking skills from Hallmark’s secret casting handbook.
Sarah Drew’s Jess is equal parts charming and relatable, especially if you’ve ever wondered how to combine a world-class music career with the inexplicable urge to sip cocoa in a European café for the rest of your life. Brennan Elliott’s Mark is classic Hallmark dad material: handsome, slightly awkward, and utterly devoted to his kids. Together, they share a chemistry so obvious that even Vienna’s famous Christmas lights seem to be rooting for them.
The movie is, of course, set against the stunning backdrop of Vienna, which is almost unfair in its beauty. From cobblestone streets to glittering Christmas markets, every scene feels like it was pulled straight from a travel brochure. Watching Jess and Mark fall in love while surrounded by twinkling lights and waltzing couples is almost enough to make you forget the plot hinges on a violinist doubting her ability to play the violin. (Spoiler: she’s great. Everyone says so. The crisis is mostly in her head.)
The romance builds through a series of classic Hallmark activities:
- Strolling through markets while holding mugs of mulled wine.
- Decorating cookies with Mark’s kids, who are obviously more invested in this love story than the adults are.
- And Jess somehow getting talked into a family Christmas recital, where everyone conveniently discovers that love and music go hand in hand.
There are plenty of laugh-out-loud moments, especially when Jess tries to navigate her feelings while Mark balances diplomacy, parenting, and falling in love with someone who’s clearly meant to be his next great adventure. The kids add just the right amount of sass and sweetness, and Vienna itself feels like a third main character—beautiful, magical, and possibly a little too perfect.
By the time Jess takes the stage for her big concert, it’s obvious where this is headed: a grand romantic gesture, a heartfelt confession, and a kiss so perfectly timed it’s probably written into the Vienna city charter. It’s cheesy, but in the best way, and you can’t help but root for them—because who doesn’t want love to triumph under a glittering chandelier?
Christmas in Vienna is the perfect mix of holiday romance, travel inspiration, and heartwarming family moments. It’s as sweet as a slice of strudel and as cozy as your favorite Christmas sweater. Watch it with a mug of something warm and let the romance—and the European charm—sweep you off your feet. 🎄🎻❤️
