Movie Review: Holiday Hearts
Subtitle: “When Christmas Cheer Comes with a Side of DIY, a Kid, and a Convenient Cabin.”
Holiday Hearts is a Hallmark movie so stuffed with yuletide clichés and festive shenanigans that it might as well come gift-wrapped. It’s got all the elements you expect: small-town charm, old flames rekindling, and a snow-covered cabin where all the magic (and drama) unfolds. If you’re in the mood for love, laughter, and way too much hot cocoa, this one’s for you.
The story follows Peyton (Ashley Williams), a big-hearted doctor who’s temporarily back in her hometown, and Ben (Paul Campbell), her childhood friend who’s now a commitment-phobic contractor. When they’re roped into organizing the town’s annual Christmas festival together, sparks fly—not just from the holiday lights, but from their lingering feelings for each other.
Oh, and there’s a kid involved, because of course there is. Ben’s niece, Lily, is the adorable catalyst for many of the movie’s heartwarming moments, as well as its hilariously over-the-top bonding activities. Between making snowmen, decorating cookies, and crafting ornaments, you’d think these people were auditioning for a reality show called Christmas Overachievers Anonymous.
Ashley Williams brings her signature spunk to Peyton, who somehow manages to juggle being a doctor, festival planner, and part-time babysitter without ever breaking a sweat. Paul Campbell as Ben is your classic Hallmark leading man: slightly clueless, quietly charming, and capable of fixing anything with a hammer and some emotional growth.
The romance? Predictable but adorable. Peyton and Ben bicker over decorations, schedules, and life choices, but you can tell from the start they’re one gingerbread house away from falling for each other. By the time they’re stranded in the aforementioned cabin due to a snowstorm (because of course they are), their chemistry is so obvious you’ll be yelling at the screen: “Just kiss already!”
And let’s not forget the unintentionally hilarious moments, such as:
- Peyton’s medical expertise being used almost exclusively to bandage minor sledding injuries and offer advice about “healing hearts.”
- Ben’s carpentry skills being treated like literal magic, as if he’s Santa’s secret handyman.
- The town’s Christmas festival, which seems to involve more decorations and drama than a Broadway production.
The kid, Lily, is a scene-stealer, delivering one-liners and heartfelt speeches that seem suspiciously wise for her age. She’s the kind of precocious child who exists only in Hallmark movies—a combination of Cupid and Martha Stewart in a tiny puffy coat.
By the time the movie ends, you’ll have experienced every Hallmark trope in the book:
- Snowball fight? Check.
- Cookie baking montage? You bet.
- Big romantic gesture involving twinkling lights? Oh, absolutely.
Final Verdict: 4/5 Christmas ornaments. Holiday Hearts is a delightful holiday romp that doesn’t take itself too seriously and leans into its cheesy charm. Watch it with a plate of cookies, and maybe prepare some DIY decorations—this movie will make you want to craft something, even if it’s just excuses to avoid a snowstorm cabin date. 🎄🔨❤️
